Many of you know that I am one of the early members of the the Passaggio Wines Passionistas Wine Club. I’ve also been a fan of the Passaggio Wines since around 2009 or 2010 when I discovered Passaggio via Twitter. Winemaker and owner Cynthia Cosco has been a friend of mine for just as long. She’s written for my blog and I’ve written for hers. I’ve reviewed a past vintage of her rosé. We go way back.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that I knew I was going to love the latest vintage of her New Generation Pinot Grigio. However, I love her Pinot Grigio for many different reasons. One of those reasons is because this can be a wine that bridges the gap between sweet and dry wines for those who are learning to broaden their wine preferences. I have a few friends who started out loving only sweet wines. To prepare their palates, so to speak, I’ve shared past vintages of Passaggio Pinot Grigio with them and they have loved it, too. That’s because the grapes are fermented and aged in stainless steel, so you taste sweeter fruits in a very pure form, with no oak or other distracting aromas and flavors.
The 2012 vintage is no exception. It’s sunshine in a glass, a gorgeous pale straw color, with very inviting floral and fruit aromas. On the palate, there’s a veritable burst of sweet, ripe melon, peaches, pears, and tropical fruits. I paired this wine with a combination veggie and meat pizza as sort of experiment, instead of going with an Italian red or Pinot Noir, and it worked perfectly. There was enough acidity to complement that of the tomato-based sauce and veggies, while the sweet fruit flavors were enhanced by the salty meats, such as pepperoni and sausage.
While it’s true I may be a bit biased, it’s also true that Cynthia’s calling is winemaking and she excels at it due to her unique approach of artistry, chemistry, and passion. If I were you, I’d recommend giving the club a try. It’s four wines twice per year at 20% off and you can still get in on the November, pre-holiday shipment. Additional wines throughout the year are also 20% off. You won’t be disappointed.
This sample was graciously given to me by Cynthia when we went wine tasting in Northern Virginia. But don’t worry, I’ll be back for more in October when I pick up my wine club shipment in person during my visit to Passaggio at Dogpatch WineWorks in San Francisco!
Cheers!
Beth
